Introduction/ Course Description: This is a hands-on course that focuses on the concepts of number sense, geometry, measurement, algebraic thinking, statistics and probability.
Textbooks: Carnegie Math
Supplies: ***(SUPPLIES MUST BE BROUGHT TO CLASS EVERY DAY)***
1 1/2 Inch 3-ring notebook or folder Scientific Calculator
Notebook Paper Pencils, Erasers and lead if needed
Graph Paper Colored Pencils (small pack)
Hand-held pencil sharpener (optional) Pencil pouch to keep in binder
headphones or earbuds
Course Outline: Topics include number sense, solving linear equations, slope and y-intercept, finding volume and surface area, linear and non-linear relationships, factoring, probability, graphing and other algebraic concepts.
Class work: Class work will be handed in daily at the end of each class unless otherwise noted
Tests: Tests will be given at the beginning and end of every chapter and will cover the information covered during the chapter. With mini quizzes as needed.
Final Exam: will be a comprehensive test.
Extra Credit: Will be given once per grading period prior to report cards
Grading Scales: Class work will be graded on a 5 point scale:
5 — Excellent. All work completed correctly and all work shown
4 — Good. All work completed and mostly correct and all work shown
3 — Average Most work completed and mostly correct all work shown
2 — Fair Some work attempted and concepts understood
1 — Poor Little work attempted and concepts understood
0 — Incomplete No work attempted or turned in
Quizzes will be graded on a 20 point scale:
20 — A All work completed correctly and all work shown
19 — A All work completed and mostly correct and all work shown
18 — A All work completed and mostly correct and all work shown
17 — B All work completed and mostly correct and all work shown
16 — B All work completed and mostly correct and all work shown
15 — C Most work completed and mostly correct all work shown
14 — C Most work completed and mostly correct all work shown
13 — D Some work attempted and concepts understood
12 — D Some work attempted and concepts understood
11 - 0 F Little work attempted and concepts understood
Points will be totaled and calculated to the standard grading scale: 100 - 90 A
89 - 80 B

Make-up Work Policy: Students are allowed to make up missed class work and quizzes if they have an
excused absence from class on the day the assignment was originally assigned. The work will be eligible
for full credit if turned in within one week from their return to class. If the work is turned in after that
they will receive at the highest a C. If the work is not completed they will receive an M for the
incomplete assignment which they can complete for partial credit.
Notebook: All students are required to keep an organized and neat 3 ring binder of all class work,
quizzes, vocabulary words, projects, and class notes. All students will be given an assignment log to
help them organize their notebook. This will be graded as a test and be added to their grade at the end of
each grading period.
Class participation: Students are required to participate in class. Participation includes completion
of all assignments, as well as participation in all group work and classroom discussions of learned
concepts. Group work is an integral part of the learning experience so participation in group work is
required for success in this class. Students may request to not participate in group work but are
discouraged from doing so. Unsafe, detrimental, derogatory or negative student behavior deemed
non-conducive to a positive and safe learning environment will have an adverse effect on the student's
grade.
